Pediatrics

Most parents select one of our pediatricians with whom they can schedule routine visits and establish an ongoing relationship and who will become familiar with the needs of the child and family. All patients are seen by appointment only.

In case of illness and depending on the urgency of the problem, an appointment may be obtained with any one of the pediatricians who is available on that day. All members of the department share the medical record and the pediatricians communicate with each other regarding the care of patients within the Group.

Newborn Care: Newborns are seen by one of the pediatricians in the Nursery at Huntington Hospital on a daily basis and when the need arises, by a neonatologist from the Division of Neonatal Medicine of North Shore University Hospital with which Huntington Hospital is affiliated.

Early follow-up of newborns in the office is encouraged, followed by routine visits at prescribed intervals. The goals of the visits include assessments of growth, neuro-developmental progress, physical examination, the administration of vaccines to prevent a variety of infectious diseases, as well as guidance and advice on topics such as nutrition and common behavior issues.

Vaccines: Immunizations against infectious diseases is a critical part of preventive care and required for school-entry.

Children's Environmental Health: The Center for Excellence in Children's Environmental Health at North Shore Medical Group is a satellite center of the Mount Sinai Pediatric Environmental Health Specialty Unit (PEHSU). Funded by a grant from New York State through Senator Carl Marcellino, the Center provides expert consultation, diagnosis, and treatment to children exposed to environmental toxins, including pesticides, mercury, and lead. It also serves as a resource and education center for physicians, caregivers, teachers and elected officials.

To speak with an environmental health expert, (Monday-Friday 9-5 pm) please call 1-866-265-6201. Additional information on the children's environmental health and for educational materials.

Telephone Calls: During the day, our staff of nurses is glad to share advice on a variety of common issues from feeding questions to the care of the cold. They also review urgent and same day visits to ensure that the patient is seen when appropriate. After hours, a physician is always on-call to meet your child's urgent medical needs.

Patient Education: The pediatricians in our department are deeply committed to sharing information that we believe to be helpful and enriching to parents.

Hours: The Department of Pediatrics is available seven days per week -- Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 6:00pm, Saturday from 8:30 am to 1:00 pm and Sunday for urgent care only.
