elcome to the Pediatric Allergy and Immunology at the Mount Sinai Hospital! We appreciate your interest in A&I and hope that this elective rotation will be a useful and gratifying experience. You are expected to attend and actively participate in A&I outpatient clinics (Faculty Practice and Hospital-based), observe food challenges in the General Clinical Research Center (GCRC), attend Friday lunch fellows' conference, assist with the inpatient consultations, as well as attend any A&I teaching sessions available during your rotation. We hope you will learn and enjoy this A&I elective!

Goals of the elective A&I rotation: Upon the completion of a one-month rotation, the resident should

  1. Be familiar with the clinical manifestations of allergic rhinitis (AR), asthma, food allergy, atopic dermatitis (AD), drug allergy, and anaphylaxis

  2. Be familiar with differential diagnosis of allergic disorders

  3. Be familiar with physical findings indicative of allergic disorders

  4. Be knowledgeable about the indications for, limitations and the interpretations of allergy evaluation by skin testing, serum allergen-specific IgE measurements, total serum IgE ; know the available tests for drug allergy

  5. Know the allergist's perspective on asthma

  6. Know the most effective strategies of environmental allergen avoidance

  7. Know practical approaches to evaluation and management of suspect food allergies

  8. Be familiar with allergen immunotherapy: indications, risks

  9. Be familiar with the classes of drugs used in AR, asthma, topical steroid preparations for AD

  10. Know the indications for and be proficient in administration of self-injectable epinephrine device such as EpiPen®. Know the difference between EpiPen® and EpiPen Jr®.

  11. Know the NHLBI clinical practice guidelines, especially classification of asthma severity and stepwise approach for managing asthma
