Public Images
Following are some resources for images in the public domain or images that can be used free of charge by educational institutions. Please be sure to carefully read each Web site's terms for downloading and use of images.
The Bristol BioMedical Image Archive is a collection of biomedical images provided for use in learning and teaching in educational institutions. Full acknowledgement must be given. Acceptable use includes the following: Inclusion in institutional Web pages.
Each of the health sciences teaching resources in the HEAL repository/referatory is licensed for free use, reproduction, and modification by registered users of HEAL according to the terms of the Creative Commons license associated with that resource. (This site is large but difficult to use. It includes Knowledge Weavers, which can be searched directly.)
Items here are not copyrighted. However, we do ask that you credit as follows: "National Eye Institute, National Institutes of Health" except where indicated otherwise. See also www.nei.nih.gov/photo/othersources.asp
All images are in the public domain and may be used, linked, or reproduced without permission. If an image is used, credit should be given to the listed source and/or author.
Almost all of the images on these pages are original graphics created by the U.S. Department of Energy Human Genome Program's Human Genome Management Information System (HGMIS). You will recognize these HGMIS images by their credit line (U.S. Department of Energy Human Genome Program or U.S. Department of Energy Genomics: GTL Program). Permission to use these graphics is not needed, but please credit the U.S. Department of Energy Human Genome Program or U.S. Department of Energy Genomics: GTL Program and provide the Web site www.ornl.gov/hgmis. All other images have been provided by third parties and were not created by the U.S. Department of Energy. You must contact the person listed in the credit line before using the images.
Most are in the public domain, but read the disclaimers.
Most of the images in the collection are in the public domain and are thus free of any copyright restrictions. If you look directly beneath the image you will see a fair use statement that tells you if the image is public domain or copyright protected. Permission is not required for public domain images, but we do ask that you credit the original institution and contributor, when known, whenever the image is used in any publicly distributed media. If the image is copyright protected, you will have to contact the content provider to get usage permission.
Use authorized for education and non-profit; authors must be credited.
Find Other Images
Also, consider doing an advanced Google image search and restricting the domain to ".gov", you'll often find things in the public domain that way.
