|
| Clinical Topic Reviews | |
| UpToDate
(On-campus only) |
|
| Geriatric medical topics are addressed in Family Medicine, Adult Primary Care. |
|
| * | Includes Lexi-Comp, a drug database, and Lexi-Interact, a drug interaction tool. |
| Geriatric topics are not addressed separately. | |
| * | Images may be searched separately. |
| * | Includes a separate drug database and over 100 medical tools and calculators. |
| A decision-support tool from the American College of Physicians; geriatric topics are listed separately. |
|
| * | Guidance and practice recommendations are supported by levels of evidence. |
| Tools for Finding Research Reports | |
| PubMed/MEDLINE | |
| * | Limits, Publication Type: Randomized Controlled Trial |
| * | Clinical Queries: Search by Clinical Study Category; Find Systematic Reviews |
| * | Search tip: to filter for studies or reports about elderly subjects, add to search query: ("aged"[MeSH Terms] OR geriatric* OR gerontol* OR older OR elderly[Text Word] OR elder[Text Word] OR elders) |
| Cochrane Library: Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL) | |
| CENTRAL is a bibliography of controlled trials. A small, easily searched database, CENTRAL includes citations to reports published in conference proceedings and other sources that MEDLINE does not index. |
|
| Clinical Practice Guidelines | |
| National Guideline Clearinghouse | |
| A public database of evidence-based clinical practice guidelines. Provides structured abstracts (summaries) about a guideline and its development; links to full-text guidelines, where available; and a Guideline Comparison utility that gives users the ability to generate side-by-side comparisons for any combination of two or more guidelines. | |
| American Geriatrics Society: Guidelines & Position Statements | |
| Clinical guidelines are designed to set practice standards for the medical care of older adults. Position statements address issues of access to quality care, research expansion and funding, and medical ethics. Many of these documents are published in the Journal of American Geriatrics Society and the AGS Newsletter. Available: http://www.americangeriatrics.org/education/cp_index.shtml | |
| PubMed/MEDLINE | |
| * | PubMed Services, Clinical Queries: Find Systematic Reviews |
| * |
Limits, Publication Types: Practice Guideline |
| Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses | |
| PubMed/MEDLINE | |
| * | Limits, Publication Types: Meta-Analysis |
| * | Clinical Queries: Systematic Reviews |
| Cochrane Library: Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews (CDSR) | |
| Systematic reviews of evidence on treatment, prevention and screening. Incorporate meta-analysis whenever possible. | |
| * | Completed Cochrane Reviews are available though PubMed's linking services. Use Clinical Queries' Systematic Reviews filter to identify them. |
| * |
CDSR also includes protocols of reviews still in progress. |
| Structured Abstracts (Summaries & Assessments) | |
| Cochrane Library: Database of Abstracts of Reviews of Effects (DARE) | |
| A database providing structured abstracts of systematic reviews, including meta-analyses. The systematic reviews summarized in DARE are not authored by Cochrane Collaborate Review Groups (i.e., they are not Cochrane Reviews). Unlike Cochrane Reviews, which are about interventions only, the systematic reviews evaluated in DARE may include questions of diagnosis, harm, and prognosis--as well as treatment and prevention. | |
| ACP Journal Club | |
| The editors of ACP Journal Club screen 100+ top clinical journals to identify important research reports, and provide enhanced abstracts for each selected article. Age and Ageing and the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society are among the titles screened. Access this electronic journal through the E-Journals page or through EBM Reviews (OVID) on the Databases page. | |
| * | In addition to ACP Journal Club, there are 10+ journals of enhanced abstracts available through Levy Library's e-Journals service. Titles begin with the words "Evidence Based", e.g., Evidence Based Medicine, Evidence Based Mental Health, and Evidence Based Nursing. |
| EBM Collections: Searching Multiple Databases | |
| Cochrane Library: | |
| Includes CDSR, DARE, CENTRAL, and the Health Technology Assessment Database. Provides full text for CDSR and DARE. | |
| NOTE: The Cochrane Collaboration maintains the Cochrane Library. The Collaboration includes 48 Collaborative Review Groups, who author and update the reviews in CDSR. You can see the list of topics being investigated by the Review Groups, as well as the abstracts of completed topics at the Cochrane Collaboration's Web site. | |
| * | An example of a Review Group is the Cochrane Dementia and Cognitive Improvement Group. Their website is available at: http://www.jr2.ox.ac.uk/cdcig |
| A list of reviews and protocols under development by the Cochrane Dementia and Cognitive Improvement Group is available at: http://www.cochrane.org/reviews/en/topics/56.html | |
| * |
In addition, Cochrane Fields and Networks, including the Health Care of Older People Field, focus on dimensions of health care other than health problems. |
| All EBM Reviews (from OVID) | |
| Includes CDSR, DARE, CENTRAL, and ACP Journal Club. Provides full text for CDSR, DARE and ACP Journal Club. | |
| TRIP Database Plus | |
| Searches over 70 Web sites, e.g., CDSR, DARE, CENTRAL, the Health Technology Assessment Database, the National Guideline Clearinghouse, eMEDICINE, and Clinical Queries. Whenever possible, links to full text. | |
