Extensive coverage of pediatric medicine and surgery topics. Clinical Practice Guidelines
National Guideline Clearinghouse

A public database of evidence-based clinical practice guidelines. "Detailed search" allows searches by specialty (e.g., Pediatrics). Provides structured abstracts and, whenever possible, links to full-text. A Guideline Comparison utility gives users the ability to generate side-by-side comparisons for two or more guidelines.

American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) Policy (http://aappolicy.aappublications.org/)

AAP Policy brings together policy statements, clinical reports, clinical practice guidelines, technical reports, and parent handouts. Guidelines are extensively referenced and include links to abstracts and citations in PubMed, when available.

PubMed/MEDLINE

* The Clinical Queries service provides a specialized search to "Find Systematic Reviews". This retrieves evidence-based practice guidelines as well as integrative studies.

The Limits feature includes the Publication Type, Practice Guideline.

Structured Abstracts (Synopses & Assessments of Studies)

Database of Abstracts of Reviews of Effects (DARE) [from the Cochrane Library (1)]

A database providing structured abstracts of systematic reviews, including meta-analyses. Unlike Cochrane Reviews, which are about treatment and prevention questions only, the systematic reviews evaluated in DARE may be on a range of questions--including diagnosis, harm, and prognosis--as well as treatment and prevention. Cochrane Reviews are not evaluated in DARE. The National Health Service's Centre for Reviews and Dissemination at the University of York produces DARE.

CAT Crawler

A meta-search site that searches online CAT libraries such as Best BETs, the PedsCCM Evidence-Based Journal Club and the University of Michigan Department of Pediatrics Critically Appraised Topics.

A series of critically-appraised topics based on the presentations done at journal clubs. Search or browse by topics.

* The PedsCCM Evidence-Based Journal Club (http://pedsccm.org/EBJournal_Club_intro.php)

The PedsCCM Evidence-Based Journal Club presents critical reviews of clinical trials related to the care of critically ill and injured infants and children. Each review is peer-reviewed by two of the PedsCCM EB Journal Club editors. Sponsored in part by Sponsorship by the American Academy of Pediatrics Section on Critical Care, the Society of Critical Care Medicine Pediatric Section, and the Pediatric Critical Care Colloquium.

* Best BETs (http://www.bestbets.org/background/ebm.html)

Although BETs initially had an emergency medicine focus, there are a significant number of BETs covering pediatrics. While it reports the best available evidence obtained through literature searching on MEDLINE and other sources, it does not examine unpublished literature in the way that systematic reviews do. BETs were developed in the Emergency Department of Manchester Royal Infirmary, UK. Each BET is attributed to a main author and also a subsidiary author who is responsible for checking the search strategy and outcome.

Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (Syntheses of Studies)

Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews (CDSR) [from the Cochrane Library (1)]

This full-text database contains systematic reviews of evidence on treatment and prevention only. Completed Cochrane Reviews incorporate meta-analysis whenever possible. CDSR also includes protocols of reviews still in progress.

Clinical Queries [From PubMed]

The Clinical Queries service applies preformatted filters in its Search by Clinical Study Category.

* Select question categories etiology, diagnosis, therapy, prognosis or clinical prediction guides.

* Apply broad and sensitive or narrow and specific filters.

PubMed/MEDLINE Search Tips

* To filter for larger (more highly powered) studies, add to your search query: AND Multicenter Study

* "Pearl" searching: To see if a relevant study has been updated by newer research, click Related Articles, and then Sort by Date.

* The Limits feature includes the Publication Type, Randomized Controlled Trial.

Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL) [from the Cochrane Library (1)]

CENTRAL is a bibliography of controlled trials. A small, easily searched database, the content in CENTRAL overlaps with MEDLINE/PubMed but also includes citations to reports published in sources that MEDLINE does not index (e.g., conference proceedings).

(1) About the Cochrane Collaboration & the Cochrane Library

The Cochrane Collaboration maintains the Cochrane Library. The Collaboration includes forty-eight Collaborative Review Groups, such as the Cochrane Neonatal Health Group, which author and update the reviews in CDSR. The Collaboration also includes thirteen Fields and Networks, which focus on dimensions of health care other than health problems, such as the type of consumer. An example is the Cochrane Child Health Field.

The Cochrane Library is a collection of databases, four of which are important to U.S. clinicians: Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews (CDSR); The Database of Abstracts of Reviews of Effectiveness (DARE); The Cochrane Controlled Trials Register (CCTR); and the Health Technology Assessment Database. The Levy Library provides access to the Cochrane Library through two collections.

* The Cochrane Library on the Wiley InterScience platform provides access to all databases in the Cochrane Library, and offers advanced search features including MeSH searching.

* EBM Reviews from OVID is a gateway to the CDSR, DARE, CCTR and the ACP Journal Club. ACP Journal Club summarizes and provides enhanced abstracts for original studies and systematic reviews in internal medicine. Select All EBM Reviews to cross-search these resources.
