Patient Education Materials

The following databases provide patient education materials and are licensed for Mount Sinai users. Materials may be printed for personal, non-commercial use in educating individual patients. Remote access to these databases is available except as noted.

MICROMEDEX Care Notes System
Contains information on an extensive number of health topics (CareNotes) and close to 1,000 frequently prescribed drugs (DrugNotes).

  • All CareNotes and DrugNotes documents are available in English and Spanish.
  • The publisher states that CareNotes are written at a 6th to 8th grade level to offer patients concise information in easy-to-understand terminology.
  • Images are included in some CareNotes handouts.
  • Printer friendly version available.
  • Search for drug handouts by trade name or generic name. Some drug classes can also be searched.
  • Users may customize handouts with special instructions and contact information; registration is not required.

MDConsult: Patient Handouts
Contains condition and treatment information for health topics and also contains medication information.

  • Also offers resource lists of books (including, when appropriate, children's books) and agencies for some diseases and conditions.
  • Spanish language versions are provided for key topics.
  • Images are included as separate printouts for some topics.
  • Printer friendly version available.
  • Search for drug handouts by trade, generic name or drug class.
  • Free registration allows users to customize handouts with special instructions and contact information.

Access Medicine: Patient Education
Contains condition and treatment information for about 100 health topics. Patient education information provided courtesy of McGraw-Hill's Postgraduate Medicine: The Practical Peer-Reviewed Journal for Primary Care Physicians, a peer-reviewed clinical journal for primary care physicians.

  • Handouts typically include a list of resource agencies.
  • Printer friendly version available.
  • Free registration allows users to customize handouts with special instructions and contact information.

eMedicine
Contains comprehensive condition and treatment information for an extensive number of health topics.

  • Advanced vocabulary may make these handouts more appropriate for better educated readers.
  • Handouts typically include a list of resource agencies.
  • Excellent images included with many topics.
  • "Printer friendly version" does not remove all Web formatting, and handouts may be lengthy.

UpToDate
Contains comprehensive condition and treatment information for an extensive number of adult health topics; few pediatric topics are available at this time.

  • Advanced vocabulary may make these handouts more appropriate for better educated readers.
  • Handouts typically include a list of resource agencies.
  • Printer friendly version available.
  • To get started using patient handouts in UpToDate, enter "Patient Information" as a search term in the main search page and click Go. Then click the Patient Information link to browse a list of health topics.
  • Please note that UpToDate is available on-campus only

STAT!Ref: USP DI® Advice for the Patient - 26th Ed.
Contains an extensive collection of very detailed drug monographs written for patients.

  • Printer friendly version available.
  • Search for drug handouts by trade name, generic name or drug class.
  • Some handouts are available for the drug class only. For example, furosemide (Lasix) is covered with other agents in a handout for Diuretics, Loop (Systemic).
