MEDLINE covers medicine, nursing, dentistry, pharmacology, veterinary medicine, the health care system, and the pre-clinical sciences.

MEDLINE dates back to the 1940's (with older records being added gradually). It contains more than 17 million citations and abstracts for more than 4,800 journals published in the U.S. and 70 other countries. To search the biomedical literature published before the 1940's, you would need to use the print volumes of Index Medicus located in the Library, or the Web of Science database, which searches biomedical references dating back to 1900.

Content: MEDLINE contains abstracts and bibliographic citations - including author, article title, journal title and publication year.
