Gastroenterology Fellowship Program

Overview

The Mount Sinai Hospital offers a fully accredited three-year Fellowship in Gastroenterology. Our GI Fellowship integrates the resources of two academically-affiliated hospitals: The Mount Sinai Hospital, the Bronx Veterans Affairs Medical Center. Please refer to the Program Description for a brief overview of the Fellowship Program. While completing an overall Core Curriculum in clinical gastroenterology and hepatology, fellows experience concentrated exposure to subspecialty areas of inflammatory bowel disease, motility, nutrition, advanced endoscopy, and GI cancer. A strong emphasis is placed on conducting clinical and/or basic research during fellowship training.

Mount Sinai School of Medicine recently renewed its GI/Liver Training Grant from the National Institutes of Health - the only grant of its kind in the New York City metropolitan area. This grant facilitates our training of individuals who are committed to an academic career in basic or clinical investigation.

The Mount Sinai GI Fellowship Program will again be participating in the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP - www.nrmp.org/fellow/index.html).

We plan to offer four positions in the Match for fellowship year beginning July 2011.

Please Note: We will be participating in the Electronic Residency Application System (ERAS) program for GI Fellowships. For details on how to apply, please visit: www.aamc.org/audienceeras.htm or call the ERAS Help Desk: (202) 828-0413. We will begin downloading applications via ERAS as of December 1, 2009, but will accept applications until January 1, 20010. Interviews will be granted during the late winter and early spring. On account of the heavy volume of applications we receive, we are usually able to arrange personal interviews with no more than 10 percent of our applicants.

When applying for a position in our Program through ERAS, please note that a complete file consists of the following:

1. Completed Application Form (Common Application Form is acceptable)
2. Curriculum vitae
3. Personal Statement
4. Three letters of recommendation:
• One must be from the Chair or Residency Program Director of your Department of Medicine.
• At least two from attending physicians who have worked closely with you during your residency.
5. Medical School Transcript
6. Medical School Performance Evaluation/Dean's Letter
7. USMLE Transcript (or COMLEX Transcript)
8. Wallet Size Color Photograph (will not be used for deciding interview status)
9. A list of all persons from whom we should expect letters of recommendation.
10. A schedule of telephone numbers (which may include beeper or cellular phone numbers) where you may be reached throughout the winter, so that we may contact you readily in case an interview needs to be arranged.

Please Note: We shall review only those files for which we have received completed application forms as well as all of the expected letters. Please be aware that the institution only sponsors J-1 and H1-B visas. Candidates on a H1-B visa must have already passed all exam steps (I, II, and III) prior to coming to Mount Sinai. In addition, the institution will consider O-1 sponsorship but candidates must be processed externally prior to the transfer.
