Fellowship in General Internal Medicine

Faculty Development

The fellowship strives to prepare trainees for the transition from resident to faculty member. In addition to research, this preparation includes the development of teaching skills, participation in faculty development conferences and continued development of clinical skills.

Teaching
Fellows precept medical residents for one three-hour session each week in the outpatient clinic of The Mount Sinai Hospital. Depending on their area of interest, fellows may also participate in curriculum development for house staff and teach in various seminars offered to medical house staff during ambulatory block months, including Evidence-Based Medicine rounds. Opportunities exist as well for teaching medical students in inpatient, outpatient and classroom settings. As for inpatient teaching, during the second year of the program fellows attend on an inpatient ward for two two-week blocks.

Direct Patient Care
Fellows follow a panel of outpatients during a single three-hour clinic session each week. The Internal Medicine Associates (IMA) Clinic is a modern, hospital-based continuity clinic and is the practice site for all internal medicine faculty and residents. The faculty and fellows offices are conveniently located in the IMA building. Opportunities also exist to participate in general medicine subspecialty clinics, such as women’s health and geriatrics.
