  • AIDS

    HIV/AIDS Information Outreach Project
    The New York Academy of Medicine's HIV/AIDS Information Outreach Project maintains this site as part of the project's goal of making available information to support and strengthen those people affected by HIV/AIDS and those who work to provide for their needs. Links are to the Web sites of community-based organizations in New York City.

    CDC National AIDS Clearinghouse
    The CDC National AIDS Clearinghouse's services are designed to facilitate the sharing of HIV/AIDS resources and information about education and prevention, published materials, and research findings, as well as news about AIDS-related trends. The CDC National AIDS Clearinghouse is a service of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Highlights of this site: CDC Business Responds to AIDS/Labor Responds to AIDS; search the CDC NAC Databases online; free Online Publications Ordering; and CDC NAC Poster Gallery.

    AIDS Data Treatment Network
    The ADTN Web Site includes information about treatments for HIV and AIDS including Spanish language information. The site features a directory of clinical trials; simple facts sheets on AIDS/HIV related topics; glossaries of drugs and opportunistic infections and conditions associated with AIDS/HIV; and a section on current news topics and information on alternative treatments.

    JAMA HIV/AIDS Information Center
    The JAMA HIV/AIDS Information Center is an easy-to-use collection of high-quality resources for physicians, other health professionals and the public. The links to Web resources will let you access clinical updates, news, and information on a broad range of social and policy issues. This site is made possible by an unrestricted educational grant. It is produced by JAMA staff under the direction of an editorial review panel and community advisory panel, but is intended as an informational resource only.

  • ANATOMY

    Slice of Life
    Slice of Life is a non-profit project based at the Spencer S. Eccles Health Sciences Library at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City. The primary purpose of Slice of Life is to encourage the development of multimedia applications for use in health sciences education. A number of software application demos may be downloaded from the Slice of Life FTP site.

    Visible Human Project
    Supported by the National Library of Medicine, the goal of this project is to create a complete, anatomically detailed, three-dimensional representation of the male and female human body. Currently, the project is collecting transverse CT, MRI and cryosection images of representative male and female cadavers at one millimeter intervals.

    American Cancer Society
    This is the official World Wide Web site of the American Cancer Society.

    Oncolink
    The first multimedia oncology information resource on the Internet, this sites provides up-to-date information appropriate for the use of health care personnel and the education of patients, families and others. Links include disease oriented menus, medical specialty oriented menus, clinical trials, medical supportive care for the cancer patient, and conferences and meetings. This site is maintained by the University of Pennsylvania's Medical Center and Cancer Center.

    PharmWeb
    PharmWeb is the first structured pharmaceutical information server on the Internet (established 1994); the first specialist Internet provider for pharmaceutical and health related organisations; managed and operated by pharmacists and medical communications specialists; mirrored at sites all over the World ensuring fast local access to information. PharmWeb provides a wide range of services such as web space, page design and authoring, graphics design, domain registration, and programming.

    Clinical Pharmacology Online
    This online service utilizes information from the Clinical Pharmacology CD-ROM, a well-reviewed resource in use by thousands of clinicians worldwide. This database is designed to provide timely, concise drug information for medical professionals. Also included in this site are "full" monographs describing the most common and classic medications in clinical practice, free of charge.

  • EVIDENCE-BASED MEDICINE

    Evidence-based Medicine
    This site was developed by the New York Academy of Medicine to support the American College of Physician's evidence-based medicine workshop, which was held at the Academy in Fall 1996.

  • HEART

    American Heart Association
    The official World Wide Web site of the American Heart Association.

    The Heart: A Virtual Exploration
    At this site, explore the heart, discover the complexities of its development and structure, follow the blood through the blood vessels, wander through the weblike body systems, learn how to have a healthy heart and how to monitor your heart's health, and look back at the history of heart science. This site was developed by The Franklin Institute Science Museum with support from Unisys Corporation.

    Images from the History of Medicine
    This computer database provides access to nearly 60,000 images, including photographs, artwork, and printed texts, drawn from the extensive collection of the History of Medicine Division at the National Library of Medicine.

  • HOSPITALS

    Hospital Web
    This site organizes a small but growing list of US and international hospitals by geographic location. There are over 25 New York institutions listed, including Beth Israel Health Care System, Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center, Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, Mount Sinai, and the New York University Medical Center. This resource list is developed and maintained by the Department of Neurology at Massachusetts General Hospital.

    Virtual Hospital
    The Virtual Hospital is a continuously updated digital health sciences library stored on computers and available over high speed networks 24 hours a day. The VH provides invaluable patient care support and distance learning to practicing physicians and other healthcare professionals. Its Iowa Health Book provides information to the general public on a variety of health issues.

    NOAH: New York Online Access to Health
    Working with several partners, the New York Academy of Medicine established NOAH to provide an authoritative, bilingual health information World Wide Web site to an underserved population of health consumers, many of whom are Spanish speaking.

Selected evaluated collections of World Wide Web sites offering free access to medical information for health care professions students, practitioners, and consumers.

  • CliniWeb
    This site is an index and table of contents to electronic clinical information that would primarily be used by health care profession students and practitioners. It includes nearly 10,000 links indexed by terms from the National Library of Medicine's Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) Anatomy and Disease trees. These links can be accessed by keyword searching or browsing through the MeSH subject hierarchy. This site is maintained by Oregon Health Sciences University.
  • Cyberstacks
    This site is a centralized and unified collection of significant World Wide Web and other Internet resources categorized using the Library of Congress classification scheme. The majority of resources are monographic or serial works, files, databases or search services. All of the selected resources are full-text, hypertext or hypermedia and of a research or scholarly nature. This site is maintained at Iowa State University.
  • Hardin Metadirectory
    Part of the University of Iowa's Virtual Hospital project, this site points to the most complete and frequently cited lists in many medical subject areas. This site boasts, "We list the sites that list the sites."
  • HealthAtoZ
    This is a free site compiled by a commerical service, Medical Network. HealthAtoZ is exclusively catalogued by medical professionals who have an understanding of and background in health and medicine. This site provides format and search capabilities for both medical professionals and consumers that save time, are comprehensive, and are consistently maintained and updated.
  • HealthWeb
    Conceived in 1994, this is a project sponsored by the Committee on Institutional Cooperation, an academic consortium of twelve major teaching and research universities (the Big Ten with the University of Chicago). This site provides organized access to evaluated non-commercial, health-related resources. The interface integrates educational information so the user has a one-stop entry point to learn skills and use material relevant to their discipline.
  • MedWeb
    This project began informally in April 1994 with a collection of links to medical resources. Since its inception, the site has grown to over 8000 links and has been supported by the Emory University Health Sciences Center Library. MEDWEB pages are generated automatically using software developed by the site's founders and search options for the site are available.
  • OMNI
    This site is developed and maintained by six British, medical libraries that belong to the OMNI consortium: Nat'l Inst for Med Research; Nottingham Univ; Cambridge Univ; Royal Free Hosp School of Med; King Edward's Hospital Fund; and Wellcome Centre for Med Sci. The site provides links to resources in the UK and worldwide.
  • Netmedicine Medical Information Source
    Offering free access to the MEDLINE database and links to other electronic medical resources, this site is developed and maintained by a commercial service, Net Medicine.
