Core Curriculum Lectures

This lecture series forms the base upon which one constructs a more complex understanding of the fields of hematology and medical oncology. A system of modules has been created under the direction of experts in each sub-field. Module leaders have designed the sessions to reflect the state of the art in each field. Lectures are every Tuesday, Wednesday, and occasionally Thursday from 7:00 to 8:00 A.M.

Coordinator: Karen Chapman

Journal Club

Clinical: Under the direction of Dr. Jonathan Schwartz, the journal club is designed to provide Fellows with an understanding of clinical trials, and with the ability to critique them. In addition to clinical research faculty members, Dr. John Mandeli, from Biomathematical Sciences, attends these meetings. Sessions are held every other Thursday at 1:00 P.M. According to schedule, determined at the beginning of the year, all Fellows in turn select papers for discussion. The journal club paper must be selected two weeks in advance of its discussion, and must be approved by Dr. Schwartz. Only recent articles in top journals are appropriate for presentation. Selected articles must be given to Ms. Celica Feliberty two weeks prior to presentation for distribution. (Lunch is served)

Basic: Under the direction of Dr. Paul Frenette, this journal club convenes one Thursday a month at 1:00 P.M. The Fellow scheduled to present must discuss the paper with Dr. Frenette two weeks prior to the presentation date. Occasionally, Dr. Frenette will refer the Fellow to a faculty member with expertise in the field referred to in the paper. The chosen article must be given to Ms. Celica Feliberty two weeks prior to presentation for distribution. (Lunch is served)

Oncology Case Management Conferences

Every Monday at 5:00 P.M., case management conferences are held. The first Monday of every month is a hematology case. The last Monday of every month is an ethics case. The remaining Mondays, oncology cases are discussed. Each Monday, no less than two cases are presented for discussion. The cases are chosen one week beforehand under the supervision of the chief Fellow. The Fellow presenting is expected to have a complete and profound knowledge of the case. Radiology studies should be presented. The Fellow is expected to have thought about the case and to have made evidence-based conclusions - which will be debated during the discussion

Coordinator: Michaela Banck, Jonathan Schwartz, M.D.

Professor Rounds

Every other Thursday at 8:00 A.M., one of the two hematology Fellows (alternately) presents management problems of patients they are following on the consult service, including a brief case presentation followed by a ten minute discussion and review of the literature. Following the presentation, faculty will discuss the case. Routine or common problems, as well as difficult or unusual cases, are heard. The Fellow is expected to have all pertinent materials available, including radiological films, immunohematology results, cytogenetics and peripheral smear and bone marrow slides. The Fellow presents the case and literature review, and the consult attending moderates the subsequent discussion. In June of every year, a Thursday morning is dedicated to Fellows research day, where senior Fellows present their career development mentored project findings.

Coordinator: Ari Melnick, M.D.

Research Seminar

Every Friday at noon, research performed by faculty, Fellows, and outside experts is presented. These lectures are of the highest quality and aid Fellows in learning about existing research at Mount Sinai, and in choosing mentors for research projects. During a two-month period in the winter, research seminars are specifically dedicated to exposing Fellows to different areas of research being conducted at Mount Sinai. In these sessions, program leaders present overall synopses of the areas they investigate along with recent progress. In particular, they highlight work being done by individual faculty members in their area, and opportunities for Fellows’ involvement in clinical and basic research. Sessions are obligatory for all Fellows and are critical to the process of choosing career development tracks.

Coordinator: Deborah French, Ph.D.
(Lunch is provided)

Educational activities are obligatory, unless otherwise noted. Clinical work can be signed out to team members in the Oncology Care Center, if necessary. Otherwise, work is resumed after the educational activity. Participating in these sessions is a condition for remaining in the fellowship program. Attendance is taken and is monitored closely. Fellows who have not participated in the educational program will not be certified.
