WelcomeAll academic departments of medicine share a common tripartite mission of patient care, research and education. But, being the largest department in a medical school that grew from a world-renowned hospital means that for us there is really one unified mission, unsurpassed excellence in patient care. Exceptional research and education programs are prerequisites to fulfilling this mission. The esteem in which our faculty are held by their peers is evident in the many invitations to serve as leaders of local, national and international societies and from the patients referred to us from doctors throughout the metropolitan area, the country and the world. Our peers have also singled out DOM faculty for many honors including electing ten to The Association of American Physicians and eighteen to The American Society of Clinical Investigators. In 2007, thirty-seven DOM physicians were listed in New York Magazine's Best Doctors issue. The Department is home to a residency program many have described as one of the best in the country. This claim is substantiated by both the remarkable students who compete for placement in the program and the success of our residents after graduation. Within both our residency and fellowship program, our aim is not only to train superb physicians, but also to mentor each individual to begin a career in academic medicine. Our goal for our graduates is that they will not only care for patients but also pursue scholarship to enhance quality of care, advance medical research, and strengthen medical education. In research the Department is ranked 10th in the nation among departments of medicine in funding from the National Institutes of Health. At the bench, DOM scientists are developing new models to study diseases, using the information provided by the human genome project to revolutionize the practice of medicine, identifying new approaches to treatments, and providing insights that are leading to a greater understanding of many diseases and conditions. Clinical researchers are testing new treatments, many developed in DOM laboratories; conducting outcomes research; working to eliminate racial disparities in health care; and evaluating new methods for improving quality of care for all patients. Whether you are a current or prospective patient, faculty member, referring physician, collaborator, resident, fellow, graduate student, or supporter as you traverse this site and discover all that the DOM has to offer it is my hope that you will be inspired to learn and strengthen your connection to the Samuel Bronfman Department of Medicine at Mount Sinai School of Medicine.
