Research Opporunities

Under the direction of clinical and basic science directors of research, research opportunities abound at The Mount Sinai Medical Center. All residents are required to participate in scholarly activity with a faculty member during the course of their residency.

The Department of Medicine ranks eighteenth in NIH funding out of all such departments in the United States. A new state-of-the art core facility in genomic and proteomic medicine has facilitated the development of an Institute for Personalized Medicine that crosses all subspecialties and is centered in the Department of Medicine. Institutes focused on emerging pathogens, metabolic disorders, cancer, cardiology, and immune diseases are directed by Department of Medicine faculty. In addition, many faculty members within the department are actively involved in these initiatives.

Starting with internship, a mentorship committee provides direct mentorship for each trainee, helping match research opportunities with career goals. This committee is distinct from the house staff advisory committee that gives feedback to each resident.

Each academic mentor advises a maximum of three residents, affording the development of closely individualized projects and career development. Specific goals and timetables for academic and scholarly achievement are set for each level of training.

A directory of research opportunities is published annually by the Mount Sinai School of Medicine. It contains specific references to the research projects that welcome house staff as participants.

Research opportunities are also available in outcomes, health policy, global health, medical education and quality of care research.

House staff research efforts culminate in a Department of Medicine Research Day each spring at the adjacent New York Academy of Medicine. This day allows for presentation of residents’ research in poster and oral presentation in clinical medicine formats.

A guest speaker is chosen each year to demonstrate the evolving role of translational science in career development and clinical care.
