Residency Programs in Internal Medicine
Conferences and Rounds
There is a distinct emphasis placed on formal instruction throughout our training program, underscoring the important role of the resident as both teacher and student. Much time and effort is spent in developing resident teaching skills, including specific workshops on teaching and leadership prior to the PGY 2 and PGY 3 years.
All inpatient and outpatient rotations have daily attending teaching rounds. Noon Conference takes place three days a week and provides a didactic program that covers all of the major topics of internal medicine, including novel curricula in medical errors, professionalism, clinical genomics, and career development workshops. Morning Report takes place on a daily basis with the chairman of medicine and the internal medicine program director.
Medical Grand Rounds is a patient-based weekly conference that addresses major current issues in translational science, including current medical practices, ethics, and education. Speakers are selected from the Mount Sinai faculty and through a search committee for visiting professorships.
A weekly intern report allows interns to refine their presentation skills and review the literature on selected topics. Weekly intern Gallup rounds, conducted by the Chairman of Medicine, focus on data gathering skills and physical examination. An intern support lunch also meets monthly. The twice-weekly Resident Report focuses on subspecialty case presentations to faculty selected by the residents.
Several additional conferences add to the educational environment. The clinicopathologic conference is a monthly teaching conference held jointly by the Departments of Medicine and Pathology. Tutorials on optimizing literature search strategies in evidence-based medicine, peripheral blood smear rounds, and cardiac bedside rounds are conducted every 1-2 weeks with expert faculty.
A schedule of the many conferences held within the Department of Medicine is published weekly and posted on the Internet. New and innovative curricula in clinical genomics, simulator-based cardiac and ventilator algorithms, professionalism, medical errors, medical ethics, and cross-cultural medicine all provide learning opportunities to produce residents who are highly versatile life-long learners.
