Residency Programs in Internal Medicine

Internal Medicine/Medical Genetics Combined Residency

The completion of sequencing of the human genome has led to rapid advances in Internal Medicine in both research and patient care. However, a shortage of internists trained in genetics threatens to slow the pace of translation of scientific progress to the bedside. In an attempt to overcome this barrier to progress, the Departments of Medicine and Human Genetics offer an innovative American Board of Internal Medicine-approved five year residency program that integrates the needs of traditional internal medicine training with comprehensive training in medical genetics.

The combined track is designed for two distinct categories of candidates:

  • Clinical exposure to both disciplines is designed for the career development of leaders in clinical genetics and genomics who will care for the increasing numbers of patients with monogenic disorders who now survive to adulthood due to improved treatments. They also care for patients with complex genetic disorders as science continues to decipher specific genetic contributions to many chronic diseases
  • For M.D. / Ph.D. students who wish to develop translational or clinical research programs in specific aspects affected by the rapid pace of genetic discovery, this residency program may obviate the need for further subspecialty training.

Under the leadership of Robert Desnick, M.D., Ph.D., and Kurt Hirschhorn, M.D., the Department of Genetics and Genomics Science at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine has an international reputation in both monogenic and adult genetic disorders. Additionally, the Department of Medicine, under the leadership of Erwin Bottinger, M.D. has developed an Institute for Personalized Medicine with scientific cores bridging the gaps between genomics/proteomics and a clinical repository for innovative translational and clinical research.

Following completion of this program, candidates will be board eligible for both Internal Medicine and Medical Genetics.

Applications are accepted through ERAS.

Note: The Research residency program has a separate NRMP number from the Internal Medicine residency program. The NRMP number is 14907666CO.
