Residency Programs in Internal Medicine
Initiatives
Advancing Idealism in Medicine
Advancing Idealism in Medicine is a house staff-initiated program that enables residents to reframe how they perceive their patients, their profession, and themselves. The goals of the program are accomplished through the following:
- International health - residents are encouraged to participate in ongoing projects and health care in carefully approved diverse global sites. In addition, for residents who wish to pursue a career as leaders in International Health, we have developed an ACGME-approved Global Health Track with an extensive residency curriculum in collaboration with Mount Sinai School of Medicine as well as other departments that culminates in a two-month senior elective at an approved international site.
- Local community projects - residents provide clinical care to the underserved in New York City.
- An outstanding lecture series - leaders in health care inspire and educate residents on issues such as health policy, advocacy, and global health care.
- Visiting Doctors Program - provides care of the homebound elderly, palliative care for patients with terminal illness, and housecalls for patients with complicated social and medical problems that cannot receive adequate care in a clinic system. Residents also participate in a uniquely developed/mentored creative project directly related to their Visiting Doctors experiences.
House Staff Council
Our house staff has formed a council of elected representatives that
has become an integral part of the governance of the Department of
Medicine. This program reflects the contribution of house staff leadership
in constantly reshaping our residency, community service, and altruism
as critical components of our educational process.
