Residency Programs in Internal Medicine
Global Health Opportunities
Residents with an interest in incorporating global health into their future career plans have a number of opportunities to learn about and work in this burgeoning field.
For in-depth immersion in the specialty, residents may choose to apply for the Global Health residency track after they are accepted into the Categorical Residency Program. Participants in this track take selected courses from Mount Sinai's Masters in Public Health Program and enter the field for an eight-week research-focused experience. Applications for this track are accepted during the PGY1 year and courses and field work are completed during PGY 2 and PGY 3.
Residents interested in developing some basic skills in global health may apply for a four-week elective during the course of their training. The elective must include a research study component.
Faculty members from the Mount Sinai Global Health Center mentor residents and help them develop appropriate research projects and identify sites for their field work. Stipends are provided.
Through the Department of Medicine Advancing Idealism in Medicine Program (AIM), speakers are invited throughout the year to lecture on a variety of topics including health policy, advocacy, and global health. AIM, a house staff-initiated program that enables residents to reframe how they perceive their patients, their professions and themselves, encompasses a number of other initiatives including:
- Local community projects where residents provide clinical care to the underserved in New York City in close collaboration with community organizations.
- Medical Spanish classes
- A rotation in Mount Sinai's renowned Visiting Doctors Program. All second year residents spend one month with the Program providing care to homebound elderly, palliative care for patients with terminal illness, and house calls for patients with complicated social and medical problems that cannot receive adequate care in a clinic system. Each resident is responsible for a creative project related to his or her experience during this block.
