Residency Programs in Internal MedicineResident LifeComputersComputer skills are now an essential tool for all physicians whether they are in practice, in training, or performing research. Faculty members who have completed fellowships in informatics lead the Computer Curriculum Development Program for the residents. The Mount Sinai Hospital offers all Internal Medicine residents a wide array of computer resources. The Levy Library has an outstanding computer center that offers courses in the use of all the standard computer applications as well as advanced classes in data retrieval, computer interactive learning, and other topics. The computer center is open daily and is available for all residents. In addition, a house staff lounge located in close proximity to the inpatient wards is equipped with computers that allow residents access to the library's Medline data base, cancer literature, psychiatric literature, on-line medical texts, full-text journals and the Internet. All residents are provided an institutional e-mail address. The residents are expected to do literature searches on each of their admissions and searching strategies are specifically taught by dedicated faculty. The Department of Medicine provides access for copying and distributing journal articles. A frequently updated web-based syllabus highlighting important review articles and therapeutic advances is easily accessible for the entire house staff. All lab, x-ray, and pathology reports in the hospital are available on computer. A new electronic medical record is currently being implemented; the outpatient record should be complete by early 2007. The new house staff conference room has immediate computer access to patient data, imaging studies, and a microscope slide projectors. Patient sign-outs are done on computer using an intranet system. The Ambulatory Care Pavilion has a computerized patient database and medical record. Return to Resident Life |
