Residency Programs in Internal MedicineOverviewThe Mount Sinai Medical Center is one of the major academic health science centers in the United States. The School of Medicine has a research facility where medical breakthroughs in both basic and clinical science are commonplace. A staff of more than 3,190 full-time and voluntary physician treats approximately 42,000 inpatients and 300,000 outpatients each year. For the eleventh consecutive year, Mount Sinai is included in the U.S. News and World Report listings of America's Best Hospitals, and is the highest-ranking New York institution in more specialties than any other area hospital. The Medical Center houses the Gustave L. and Janet W. Levy Library which contains more than170,000 volumes and 1,900 current periodicals. The Library is accessible from computers that are maintained on each of the teaching wards throughout the hospital. In addition to the School of Medicine, research laboratories, The Mount Sinai Hospital, and ambulatory care buildings complete the Medical Center. A new research and clinical building, the Icahn Medical Institute, adds more than 700,000 square feet to the facilities of the Medical Center. Mount Sinai School of Medicine ranks among the highest of all U.S. medical schools in NIH funding and is one of the fastest growing research institutions in the country. A primary care teaching facility offers state-of-the art outpatient care adjacent to the Hospital. This building houses our General Internal Medicine and Geriatric Faculty Practices as well as the patient practices of our internal medicine residents. It is also the center for teaching ambulatory care. Located in the Upper East Side of Manhattan, Mount Sinai is east of Central Park on Fifth Avenue. Central Park is a great urban park noted for its scenic beauty, sports facilities (tennis, boating, swimming, jogging, bicycling, rollerblading, horseback riding, ice skating, softball, baseball and sleigh-riding), and year-round cultural events (concerts, theater, and nature walks). Mount Sinai is at the upper end of Museum Mile, which boasts world famous museums such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Frick Collection, and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum. Department of MedicineThe Samuel Bronfman Department of Medicine has approximately 300 full-time and 280 voluntary faculty. The faculty includes many internationally recognized investigators as well as many outstanding clinical practitioners who provide an extraordinarily rich range of mentors and role models for our trainees. The Department's research budget is $43.4 million per year, of which $32.0 million are from grants funded by the National Institutes of Health and other federal agencies. The Department of Medicine is currently ranked 18th among 111 other departments of medicine. This remarkable depth of active research permits all residents to have an opportunity to join an ongoing research project and learn firsthand the process of designing a protocol, developing informed consent forms, obtaining and interpreting data, and, ultimately, presenting and publishing the results. Last year, 68 research projects in the Department were presented at the annual House Staff Research Day, which allows each resident to present his/her projects to the entire Medical Center staff. Department of Geriatrics and Adult DevelopmentThe Brookdale Department of Geriatrics and Adult Development is one of only two separate departments of geriatrics in the United States. The geriatric program is world renowned for its excellence in both clinical care and research. The Department of Geriatrics and Adult Development works closely with the Department of Medicine on the education of residents and has recruited many of our graduates to pursue fellowships and careers in geriatrics. |
