Residency Programs in Internal Medicine

Teaching Program

There is a strong emphasis on formal instruction throughout our training program. This includes an emphasis on the resident as teacher as well as learner. Much time and effort is spent in developing resident teaching skills, including specific workshops on teaching and leadership prior to the PGY-2 and PGY-3 years. All inpatient and outpatient rotations have daily attending teaching rounds. Noon conference takes place three days a week and is a didactic program that covers all of the major topics of internal medicine. Morning report takes place on a daily basis and is a time of intense interactive learning for PGY-2s and PGY-3s in a new, state-of-the art conference room that allows for computerized data, x-rays, and microscopic slides to be retrieved. Medical grand rounds take place on a weekly basis and feature our own faculty as well as guest faculty from around the world. Intern report takes place once per week and allows interns to hone their presentation skills and review the literature on selected topics. Intern Gallup rounds, conducted by the Chairman, allow the interns to focus on data gathering and physical examination skills. Resident report takes place twice per week with subspecialty case presentations to faculty selected by the residents.

A schedule of the many conferences of the Department of Medicine, including all Divisional conferences, is published weekly. Specific innovative conferences for the residency include medical errors conference, inpatient and outpatient journal clubs, clinical genomics, Internal Medicine-Emergency Medicine conferences, peripheral blood smear rounds, and cardiology bedside rounds. As noted, a novel inpatient curriculum utilizes novel tools to educate in the core competencies and cross-cultural medicine.
