Residency Programs in Internal MedicineTraining LocationsThe Internal Medicine Training Program, with its strong emphasis on patient diversity, includes three hospitals:
Approximately two thirds of the residents' training time is spent at The Mount Sinai Hospital, a facility that provides tertiary care to patients referred for the diagnosis and treatment of complex medical problems, as well as primary and secondary care to people of the Upper East Side and East Harlem communities. Residents care for patients in the hospital and provide ambulatory care in the Internal Medicine Associates faculty practice. One third of the residency is spent away from The Mount Sinai Hospital at the Bronx VA Medical Center and the City Hospital at Elmhurst. Experience at these facilities adds unique patient populations to the resident's training experience. The inpatient ward rotations at The Mount Sinai Hospital, the Elmhurst Hospital Center, and the Veterans Administration Medical Center are designed to maximize resident education. We use a modified night float system to adhere to the 80-hour work week regulations. Overnight call is every fourth night on inpatient rotations at all three hospitals, except for the MICU/CCU where it is assigned every third night. Our year is divided into thirteen four-week blocks for scheduling purposes. Residents on the inpatient rotation are expected to learn team management skills for their teams of attending interns, sub-interns, and clerks. They must also coordinate the teaching and learning of the essential skills of internal medicine on their team. This new system was designed with significant participation from the house staff, and was driven by our educational goals and not service responsibilities.
