Key Speakers

Erica Friedman, M.D.

Dr. Friedman is an Associate Professor of Medicine, the Co-Director of the Medicine/Geriatrics Clerkship and the Assistant Dean of Evaluation at MSSM. As the Assistant Dean of Evaluation, she is responsible for assuring student evaluation of all courses and clerkships, overseeing medical school program evaluation, and the continued enhancement of the assessment of our courses, clerkships and faculty. Her keynote address was provided basics of evaluation theory and new methods of evaluation currently being used. The title of her talk was “The Value in Evaluation.”

Richard Woodrow, D.S.W.

Dr. Woodrow is the Executive Director of the Department of Organizational Development and Learning at The Mount Sinai Hospital. He is a Doctor of Social Work and is a faculty advisor for the IME. He is a specialist in team building, leadership development and small group facilitation. Dr. Woodrow led an interactive discussion/debrief of key learning issues raised in the morning small group session entitled “One small change can make a difference.”

Richard Simons, M.D.

Dr. Simons is a Professor of Medicine and the Acting Vice Dean for Ed Affairs at Penn State College of Medicine, Hershey Medical Center. He oversees all undergraduate med school curriculum, all graduate medical education activities for the hospital, and he is the chair of the curriculum evaluation committee. With this perspective, he spoke about evaluation of medical school curriculum and his experience at Penn State College of Medicine. The title of his talk was “Curriculum Evaluation: A Model for Systematic Assessment and Decision Making.”

Glenda Shoop

Ms. Shoop is the Director of Curriculum Development and Evaluation at Penn State College of Medicine. She has a Master’s degree in Education from Penn State University and is currently pursuing her Ph.D. in Instructional Systems. She is also a member of the curriculum evaluation committee and her focus of study is program evaluation. She added to Dr. Simon’s keynote address by identifying the practical application of some of the evaluation models instituted at Penn State College of Medicine.

Devra Cohen

Ms. Cohen is the Assistant Director of the Morchand Center for Clinical Competence at MSSM. She is also an assistant professor in the Department of Medical Education and the Director of the Communication Skills Course that is part of Courses without Walls at Mount Sinai. She has a Masters of Art degree in Theatre Techniques in Education and Psychology. She has a special interest and expertise in the area of communication skills assessment. Devra facilitated the discussion/debrief of the afternoon small group session entitled “The impossible mission: Evaluating behaviors and attitudes.”
