Faculty Development
The Resident Teaching Development Program
Introduction
The Institute for Medical Education has created The Resident Teaching Development Program as part of our faculty development program. The goal of the program is to improve the teaching and leadership skills of all of our residents at The Mount Sinai Hospital and its affiliate institutions.
Objectives
- To improve residents’ confidence as clinical teachers and team leaders of interns and medical students.
- To prepare residents for this role by providing them with practical teaching techniques that work in the variety of settings in which they teach.
- To provide residents with realistic techniques for setting goals/expectations for their learners and for giving them formative feedback.
- To improve clinical teaching by residents in the Mount Sinai School of Medicine community.
Description
The day-long course is taught to PGY-2 residents and consists of three core modules: Setting Goals and Expectations, Teaching Theory and Techniques, and Giving Feedback. Each module is approximately two hours in length. We have collaborated with chief residents and program directors of multiple departments to tailor the curriculum to each specialty. We have created relevant clinical case examples and role plays that highlight issues unique to each department. We began the curriculum in 2002 and have since included Obstetrics and Gynecology, Pediatrics, Surgery, Psychiatry, Internal Medicine, and Emergency Medicine residency programs.

Our goal is to bring this multispecialty resident teaching skills curriculum
to all residents at The Mount Sinai Hospital (MSH) and its approximately 13
affiliate hospitals. The task is challenging given the organizational complexity
of implementing the curriculum on such a large scale. Therefore, we are also
offering the Teach the Teacher faculty development program. This program trains
faculty from MSH and our affiliates to teach the existing resident teaching
skills curriculum (RTDP) in their own institutions. Please see Teach
the Teacher to learn more.
The Resident Teaching Development Program also fulfills many of the ACGME
competencies required for all graduate medical education training programs
(see ACME Web site below).
