Faculty DevelopmentTeach the TeacherIntroductionThe Institute for Medical Education has created an exciting new faculty development program to train faculty to teach the Resident Teaching Development Program (RTDP). Residents are often the primary teachers of interns and medical students in academic medical centers but are rarely given any formal preparation for teaching. Our goal is to bring a multi-specialty resident teaching skills curriculum to all residents at The Mount Sinai Hospital (MSH) and its approximately 13 affiliate hospitals. The task is challenging given the organizational complexity of implementing the curriculum on such a large scale. Therefore, we designed a Teach the Teacher Program to train faculty from MSH and our affiliates to teach the existing resident teaching skills curriculum in their own institutions. ObjectiveTo create a faculty development program that enables faculty at MSSM and affiliate institutions to implement, effectively teach, and sustain a resident teaching skills curriculum for their own house staff. DescriptionIn 2001, we developed a multispecialty resident teaching skills course, entitiled the Resident Teaching Development Program (RTDP), to provide teaching instruction for all residents in the MSSM community. This day long course is taught to PGY-2 residents and is customized to each specialty. The core program includes Setting Goals, Teaching Theory and Techniques, and Giving Feedback. The response has been overwhelmingly positive in all specialties. We are currently working on expanding this important curriculum to all affiliate departments by training faculty in each department to teach the RTDP.
The Teach the Teacher faculty development program is scheduled for January 23 and 24, 2006. This intensive, two day faculty development program included 13 participants, representing six institutions and seven different specialties. Faculty were placed in the roles of "residents" on the first day to experience the Resident Teaching Development Program (RTDP). On day two, the faculty reviewed effective facilitation methods, practiced teaching, received feedback, and created concrete implementation plans. They were also provided with resources such as a detailed teacher's guide, a group list-serve, and an extensive selection of web-based references.
After completing the course, 100 percent of participants stated that they felt prepared to teach the RTDP to their residents and only four of the 13 faculty had any previous training in education/teaching skills. Six months after the course, four faculty had taught the seven-hour curriculum to their residents in its entirety while five others had taught a shortened version. Overall, nine of the 13 faculty (69.2 percent) had taught some version of the course. Three more faculty will teach the course within the next year. Most of the faculty were also interested in conducting faculty development courses and we expect that the faculty who attend will likely become the faculty developers in their respective departments as they gain more experience. The Teach the Teacher program is proving to be an effective means of training faculty to establish a resident teaching skills program in their own departments. This program will be continued yearly with the hope of developing a cadre of medical educators dedicated to enhancing teaching excellence at MSSM. We would like to include one-to-two faculty in each Mount Sinai or affiliate department. The only requirement for registration is that you have support from your department chairman or division chief to attend the Teach the Teacher program and lead the residency teaching skills program for your department.
