To mark the occasion of the fiftieth anniversary of the founding of the Department of Anesthesiology of The Mount Sinai Hospital, we are pleased to present this issue of The Mount Sinai Journal of Medicine. In 1951, when the Department of Anesthesiology was founded, the profession of anesthesiology was in its infancy. The department and the profession have grown together, to the point where they have both made major contributions to the practice of medicine. To celebrate and highlight these contributions, we have gathered articles covering a broad range of topics. Yet they represent only a small portion of the scientific output of our colleagues and alumni.

The Department of Anesthesiology of the Mount Sinai Medical Center has trained many leaders in the field. Many of these physicians have moved on to other institutions and carried on the dissemination of knowledge and clinical excellence. We hope that the future will be even more productive than the past. We would also like to thank the editorial staff of The Mount Sinai Journal of Medicine for their help with this project.
