HPV Vaccine Study

Currently, over 200 different types of human papilloma viruses (HPVs) have been recognized. At least 30 types have been identified that infect the genital mucosa. Fifteen of these HPV types are high risk types that can cause either cervical cancer or high grade dysplasia (a pre-cancerous condition). The two most prevalent HPV high risk types are HPV 16 and HPV 18. HPV 16 accounts for approximately 50 percent of cervical tumors worldwide; HPV 18 is associated with approximately 16 percent of cervical tumors.

Worldwide, nearly 470,000 new cases of cervical cancer are diagnosed each year. In developing countries, cervical cancer represents one of the leading causes of death by cancer in women. In the United States, despite the wide availability of Pap smear screening, approximately 14,000 cases of cervical cancer are reported each year.

Mount Sinai School of Medicine (Division of Medical Infectious Diseases and the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Reproductive Science) has been selected as a site for the PATRICIA Trial, an international research study to determine whether or not an investigational vaccine is effective in preventing (1) persistent cervical infections with HPV 16 and 18 infections and/or (2) cervical dysplasia/cervical cancer. The vaccine being evaluated in the current study is a virus-like particle (VLP) vaccine for the HPV 16, 18 virus types. It is not a live virus vaccine. It does not contain viral DNA and therefore, is not capable of causing infection. [GCO # 04-0754 OB; BRANY IRB approved through June 8, 2005].
