Current ResearchValtrex StudyMount Sinai School of Medicine (Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Reproductive Science) has been selected as a site for a multi-centered research study to investigate the effects of Valtrex antiviral suppression on patients who have serologic evidence of past exposure to herpes simplex virus type-2 (HPV) but have never had any recognized outbreaks or symptoms of genital herpes. This study is funded by GlaxoSmithKline, the manufacturer of Valtrex. Approximately 65 participants from 20 medical centers will take part in this study, and about six of these subjects will be here at Mount Sinai. Participants in this study must be healthy women over the age of 18 with no history of genital herpes. Volunteers will receive a free confidential blood test to determine if they have been exposed to HSV-2. Only those who test positive are eligible to enroll. Trial participants will be randomized to receive Valtrex or placebo once daily for 60 days in a two-way crossover design.
