Department Organization

The Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Science at The Mount Sinai Hospital and Elmhurst Hospital Center is a major combined, comprehensive service with a total of 110 obstetrical beds and 18 birthing rooms to accommodate 6,000 deliveries annually, as well as 71 gynecologic beds for approximately 4,800 gynecologic admissions each year. Approximately 100,000 outpatient and emergency room visits a year are overseen by faculty and house staff. The Department is responsible for the entire range of clinical inpatient and outpatient activities in both obstetrics and gynecology.

The Department provides a complete teaching program for 132 medical students annually, and Elmhurst serves as a clinical site for fifth pathway medical students. The Department offers a four-year training program for 28 residents, fulfilling the requirement of the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology for specialty training. The cumulative expertise and experience of the attending staff and the diversity and number of patients seen exceptionally qualify the Department to be approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) for fellowships in three subspecialties: Maternal-Fetal Medicine, Gynecologic Oncology, and Gynecologic Minimally Invasive Surgery.

Michael L. Brodman, M.D. assumed the role of chairman of the Department in January 2003.

Janine Popot, M.D. is the Program Director.

Erin Ward is the Residency Coordinator.

The Mount Sinai Hospital

Located on Manhattan's Upper East Side just opposite Central Park, The Mount Sinai Hospital is one of New York's major teaching hospitals, with 1,200 inpatient beds and a full range of tertiary- and quaternary-care services. The Mount Sinai Hospital shares a physical plant with Mount Sinai School of Medicine, affording residents access to the School of Medicine's Levy Library and other academic resources. Residents spend seven to nine months each year in rotation at The Mount Sinai Hospital.

Elmhurst Hospital Center

Training at Elmhurst Hospital Center, a 618-bed, tertiary care center affiliated with Mount Sinai and located in Elmhurst, Queens, rounds out the residents' experience. Residents spend three to five months each year at EHC providing care for all obstetrical and gynecologic patients. Attending supervision is provided by physicians with appointments at Mount Sinai School of Medicine.

Rotation through this city hospital offers residents experience in caring for severely ill gynecologic and obstetrical patients with complex medical and social problems. The patients represent an extraordinary variety of ethnic backgrounds and constitute a unique patient population. EHC maintains an ambulance service that transports acutely ill people, including unregistered obstetrical patients, to the hospital. These rotations provide an excellent educational experience to complement the one obtained at The Mount Sinai Hospital.
