Donna Gagliuso, M.D.Dr. Donna Gagliuso is Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology at Mount Sinai School of Medicine where she has been a full-time faculty member since 1992. Specializing in medical, surgical, and laser treatment of the glaucomas, she has participated in the research and development of what are now some of the most widely used medical therapies for glaucoma. In addition to the time she devotes to her thriving practice, she also serves as the Residency Program Director for the Department of Ophthalmology. In her capacity as Program Director, Dr. Gagliuso oversees the education and training of the ophthalmology residents. Graduating magna cum laude from Dartmouth College, Dr. Gagliuso received her M.D. from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York. She went on to do her internship in the Department of Medicine at New York University Medical Center's Bellevue Hospital, then completed her residency in Ophthalmology and fellowship training in glaucoma at Mount Sinai Medical Center. Dr. Gagliuso is a Diplomate of the American Board of Ophthalmology. Dr. Gagliuso is an active member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the New York Glaucoma Society and the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology. Her areas of research have included analysis of the methods of computerized digital imaging of the optic nerve head, in particular developing accurate means of detecting progression of disease. Dr. Gagliuso is a participant in the study of new neuroprotective agents that may play an important role in the future management of glaucoma, and is also involved in the comparative study of conventional glaucoma medications. She has recently coauthored a chapter in Duane's Foundations of Clinical Ophthalmology about one such group of medications, hyperosmotic agents. Dr. Gagliuso's clinical practice is devoted to the diagnosis, medical and surgical treatments of all variants of glaucoma and cataract. Generally, it is a long visit, requiring several hours. Visual fields may be performed, and patients new to the practice may have photographic and digital imaging studies done.
