Janet Serle, M.D.
Dr. Janet Serle is Professor of Ophthalmology at Mount Sinai School of Medicine, where she has been a member of the full-time faculty since 1985. She specializes in the medical, laser and surgical treatmenst of glaucoma and is an internationally sought after teacher and lecturer. She is the Principal Investigator of several industry-sponsored grants evaluating new medical treatments for glaucoma. After graduating cum laude from the State University of New York at Stony Brook, Dr. Serle went on to receive her M.D. from Harvard Medical School. She did her internship in surgery at Roosevelt Hospital in New York City, then completed her residency and two years of glaucoma fellowships at Mount Sinai Medical Center. She was a recipient of the prestigious Heed Foundation fellowship. Dr. Serle devoted 13 years of service as Residency Program Director for the Department of Ophthalmology receiving the Abraham Kornzweig Award for Excellence in Resident Teaching. She is a Diplomate of the American Board of Ophthalmology. Amongst her many honors and awards, Dr. Serle received the Honor Award from the American Academy of Ophthalmology in 1995. Dr. Serle has been a Principal Investigator on more than 25 National Institutes of Health or industry-sponsored research grants and has published more than 40 peer-reviewed articles and chapters. Currently, she is investigating the effectiveness and safety of oral memantine in patients with glaucoma, as well as comparing the glaucoma medications Alphagan and Xalatan. She is the Program Chairman of the New York Glaucoma Society and a member of the Editorial Board of the Journal of Glaucoma. An applauded teacher, she has been an invited guest lecturer at the International Congress of Ophthalmology and the International Glaucoma Society. A member of numerous scientific and medical societies, Dr. Serle served as President of the New York Society for Clinical Ophthalmology and has been the Glaucoma Editor for Focal Points, a Continuing Medical Education publication for the American Academy of Ophthalmology. Dr. Serle's clinical and surgical expertise in the diagnosis and treatment of adult and childhood glaucomas has earned her a reputation amongst her peers as one of the most highly respected glaucomatologists. She performs filtering surgery with and without antimetabolites, inserts setons, and performs surgery for congenital and juvenile onset glaucoma. Generally, it is a long visit, requiring several hours. Visual fields will be performed, and patients new to the practice have photographic and digital imaging studies done. Your eyes may be dilated, so bringing sunglasses is suggested. We ask that you bring all medications you might be using at this time.
