Medical Student Research Office

Travel Grant Award

General Information

Presenting your research work at outside meetings is an exciting and rewarding experience. The Medical Student Research Office provides financial support for student travel to medical and scientific conferences of up to $500, or 50% of eligible expenses, if the student’s mentor agrees to match this award. Under specific circumstances, for example, if the student receives a travel award from the conference, the mentor’s support may be waived.

In order to qualify for a travel award:

  1. the student must be the first author on the abstract submitted and be giving the presentation, e.g., oral talk or poster.
  2. the work presented must be the student’s original work.
  3. an eligibility form must be completed and returned as soon as notice that the abstract has been accepted is received. This form includes an estimate of the expenses you expect to incur. While we try to help all qualifying students, our funds are limited and they are not guaranteed. If your trip depends upon receiving a travel award, please do not book your travel or hotel until you know whether or not support will be available.
  4. the student’s faculty mentor must submit a letter approving the trip and stating how he/she thinks the student will benefit. If the mentor declines to provide financial support, the basis for this must be included in the letter.
  5. the course or clerkship director must give his/her approval for the student to be away.
