The Lillian and Benjamin Hertzberg Palliative Care Institute

Bereavement Services

This program provides a continuum of bereavement services to the families of patients served by the Hertzberg Palliative Care Institute. Although grief is the natural and normal reaction to the death of a loved one, it can sometimes feel quite overwhelming and confusing. The bereavement program is designed to provide a comforting blend of information, support, counseling, and referral in an effort to increase coping and decrease isolation. Family members who may be particularly vulnerable to certain aspects of the grief experience are referred for additional services as needed. For those interested, referrals are also available for local bereavement support groups. For more information on bereavement services, please call (212) 241-1446.

Memorial Service

All family members of palliative care patients, palliative care staff and other hospital staff are invited to attend a semi-annual memorial service. The Memorial service typically includes staff and family participation, with readings, music and poetry from a multi-faith and secular perspective.

Bereavement Volunteer Opportunity

If you're interested in a meaningful volunteer opportunity, the bereavement services program offers an 11 hour training and ongoing supervision. Volunteers who successfully complete the training will provide telephone follow-up to grieving family members or may participate in other program projects.
