Nurse Practitioner RotationThe Hertzberg Palliative Care Institute has developed relationships with several area schools of nursing and regularly hosts nurse practitioner students from New York University, Columbia University and Yale University. Nurse Practitioner students co-manage care of a subset of patients based on demonstrated ability and clinical goals. Time may also be spent assessing new consults. Students have the opportunity to manage pain and symptoms, talk with patients about advanced directives and be involved in family meetings. Exposure to a range of patient populations including oncology, intensive care, geriatrics, general medicine and surgery patients allows for a dynamic clinical rotation. Clinical rotations in palliative care are available to a limited number of additional Nurse Practitioner students with advanced scheduling. Clinical rotations are most robust when the student can join the team on a full time basis (40hrs/week) for a 4 week block of time. This optimizes learning and promotes highest continuity for both patients and the students following them. Rotations can be scheduled by contacting Diane Maguire. |
