Mount Sinai School of MedicineLocated in Manhattan, Mount Sinai School of Medicine is internationally recognized for ground-breaking clinical and basic-science research, and innovative approaches to medical education. Mount Sinai ranks 9th in the percentage of graduates who go on to faculty positions in medical schools across the country. One indication of Mount Sinai's leadership in scientific investigation is its receipt during FY02 of over $142 million in NIH grants, placing it 22nd among the nation's 125 medical schools. Mount Sinai School of Medicine also is known for unique educational programs such as the Humanities in Medicine program, which creates opportunities for liberal arts students to pursue medical school, and instructional innovations like The Morchand Center, the nation's largest program teaching students and physicians with "standardized patients" to become not only highly skilled, but compassionate, caregivers. Long dedicated to its community, the School extends its boundaries to work with the East Harlem community through diverse health care and educational initiatives. The Lilian and Benjamin Hertzberg Palliative Care InstituteThe Palliative Care Program at Mount Sinai Medical Center was developed as a response to the physical and emotional needs of hospitalized patients and families facing serious and life-threatening illness. The Institute was officially inaugurated in 1995 with an educational initiative funded by the Project on Death in America. Clinical services began in 1997 with the creation of an in-patient consultation service. Our daily census averages between 25 and 35 patients divided between two teams with a monthly consultation volume of 80-100 new patients and a total of 1050 unique patients seen in 2006. In 1998, the program was privately endowed and renamed the Hertzberg Palliative Care Institute. In 2002, we established an outpatient palliative care consult service. We are now partnering with Oncology, Geriatrics and other specialties to establish an integrated program for ambulatory patients. Our Integrated Palliative Medicine Fellowship is an NCI-funded model of postgraduate training in oncology, geriatrics, and palliative medicine. Fellows enter either a three-year integrated geriatrics/palliative medicine track or a four-year hematology/oncology/palliative medicine track. The Visiting Scholar ProgramThe Visiting Scholar Program is based at the Lilian and Benjamin Hertzberg Palliative Care Institute (HPCI) of the Brookdale Department of Geriatrics and Adult Development. A needs assessment will help customize the program for participants' objectives and goals, whether they are clinical, educational, or research oriented. Participants are encouraged to apply well in advance. A completed application must be received by the Education Coordinator at least 3 months before the actual visit is requested. Scholars may spend one (1) to four (4) weeks in the program. To help us create the most comprehensive and effective experience for Visiting Scholars, we ask each applicant to complete an application and a needs assessment form. Once the application is received and reviewed, the prospective participant will be notified of program availability and scheduling details. If the requested dates are not available, alternate dates will be offered. Fees*The Hertzberg Palliative Care Institute is supported by tuition fees, grant revenue and donations.
