School-Based Health Centers

Overview

Mount Sinai sponsors Pediatric School-Based Health Centers (PED SBHC) at four school sites in East Harlem, Community School District #4, during the school year and summer months. The PED SBHCs are located at P.S. 38, P.S. 83, P.S. 108 and J.H.S. 117 and offer family-centered, culturally competent, comprehensive primary care and preventive services for children and youth attending these schools. Services include complete physical exams for school entry and sports, management of chronic conditions specifically asthma and diabetes, immunizations, vision and hearing screenings, dental and medical referrals, family planning services where appropriate, mental health counseling, and health education.

Pediatricians, nurse practitioners, social workers, and medical office assistants staff the PED SBHCs. Health education programs are provided by a cross-section of Mount Sinai staff. In the 2001 – 2003 school year, 2,343 or 59 percent of the children at these four schools were enrolled in the School-Based Health Centers, and children made a total of 28,473 visits. One school, P.S.38, also provided medical services to over 480 children living in nearby community shelters.

The Pediatric School-Based Health Centers are an integral part of the Division of General Pediatrics. They are also affiliated with and are central to several programs and research endeavors within Mount Sinai hospital as well as local community service organizations.
