Message from the Chair

The Department of Structural and Chemical Biology applies powerful tools of experimental and computational structural biology, biophysics, and chemical biology to the fundamental problems in biomedical research with emphasis on the molecular and structural basis of human biology and disease. The Department currently consists of nine research laboratories with an active development plan to recruit new faculty both in structural and chemical biology. Scientists in the Department study three-dimensional atomic structure, molecular function and regulation of biological macromolecules and complexes, and design and develop novel small-molecule chemicals to advance basic and translational research. Topics of investigation include structure and function of cell membrane-bound ion channels and receptors in cardiology and cell development; and molecular mechanisms of gene transcription and translation, epigenetic regulation and DNA damage repair in stem cell biology, immunology and virology with ultimate goal to understand the molecular basis of human diseases such as cancer, Alzheimer's disease and genetic disorders. The research and academic training in the Department is supported by state-of-the-art shared research resources in structural and chemical biology, and facilitated by regular research seminars and conferences at Mount Sinai School of Medicine. The mission of the Department is to provide a nurturing environment for discovery and innovation in basic and translational biomedical research of human biology and disease, and for advanced academic training of physicians and scientists; and to function as a scientific hub for interdisciplinary collaborations with researchers of different disciplines to tackle most challenging problems in biomedical sciences. I invite you to explore at this web site the exciting biomedical research and education programs being conducted in this Department.
