Biography
Dr. Butts is boarded in pediatrics and has been part of Mount Sinai Medical Center since beginning his training in Pediatrics in 1980. Since then, he has held leadership positions in clinical, academic medicine and public health, including directing the Mount Sinai Pediatric Clinics, developing and directing the Mount Sinai Pediatric School Health Program, serving as Deputy Commissioner for the New York City Department of Health, and serving in leadership roles with the Association of American Medical Colleges and the Associated Medical Schools of New York State.
Since 1998, Dr. Butts has served as Associate Dean for Multicultural Affairs. In 2002, he was awarded a Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) grant for a Center of Excellence for Minority Health, which helped establish the Mount Sinai Center for Multicultural and Community Affairs (CMCA), which Dr. Butts currently directs. A major aim of CMCA is to conduct a comprehensive Faculty Recruitment and Development Program by substantially expanding institution-wide diversity initiatives, facilitate minority health outcomes research, and provide education and training to improve professional competencies for cross-cultural healthcare. Under his leadership, CMCA has supported an increase in Mount Sinai medical student matriculants from groups underrepresented in medicine to over 20% and helped double the percent of Black and Latino faculty (from 4% to almost 8%) at Mount Sinai.
Dr. Butts hails from Brooklyn, New York, received a BA in psychology from Columbia College and his MD from Cornell University Medical College. Since 1980, he has served without interruption, on the faculty of the Mount Sinai School of Medicine. He currently holds joint appointments as Associate Professor, Clinical-Educator track, in the Departments of Medical Education, Pediatrics, and Community and Preventive Medicine.

Physicians and scientists on the faculty of Mount Sinai School of Medicine often interact with pharmaceutical, device and biotechnology companies to improve patient care, develop new therapies and achieve scientific breakthroughs.
