  • Infant Psychiatry / Therapeutic Nursery

The Mount Sinai Therapeutic Nursery is an Early Intervention treatment program accredited by the New York State Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. It serves children from 12 months to five years of age. The Therapeutic Nursery is an interactive setting that facilitates the social and emotional development of the child with emphasis on nurturing the relationship between the caregiver and the child.

The Therapeutic Nursery provides two types of programs that offer special instruction, behavior management, speech/language therapy, and play therapy. The Early Intervention Program, for one-to-three year old children, has two separate sessions that meet three half days per week (Mondays through Wednesday) for two hours in the morning or afternoon. The Early Intervention Program is unique because the caregiver actively participates in the teaching milieu and it provides the caregivers with a support group to discuss concerns about their children. The second program meets after school and provides play therapy for three-to-five year old preschoolers. The after school program meets once a week on Mondays for one hour and is for children with behavioral issues and those in need of assistance with their social skills. The preschool program also provides a parent support and education group.

The Therapeutic Nursery uses a multidisciplinary model consisting of a comprehensive team of experts in infant mental health, social work, early childhood special education, and speech-language pathology. This team strives to meet the needs of children with a wide range of delays including cognitive, speech - language delays, emotional and behavioral problems, difficulty with peer interactions, hyperactivity, eating problems/failure to thrive, sleeping issues, and separation anxiety.

The Mount Sinai Therapeutic Nursery is currently accepting families to join our warm and caring atmosphere.

    • Learning and Development Center

The Learning and Development Center is composed of a team of caring professionals that provides a comprehensive approach to the evaluation and treatment of children, adolescents, and adults with Developmental Disorders, Learning Disabilities, and emotional disturbances. The core of our multi-disciplinary efforts is a state-of-the-art neuropsychological evaluation which includes a detailed analysis of the individual's medical, family, social, psychiatric, and developmental history. We perform a thorough examination of the building blocks that facilitate learning including:

      • Intellectual ability
      • Academic achievement
      • Attention and concentration
      • Visual and auditory perception
      • Language
      • Learning and memory
      • Motor skills
      • Executive functioning

To augment information obtained during the formal evaluation, Learning and Development Center staff conduct classroom observations to: (i) evaluate the goodness-of-fit between the youngster's cognitive, behavioral, and social-emotional skills and his/her learning environment, and (ii) assess the individual's peer group and the nature of his/her social interactions.

Each evaluation culminates in an interactive feedback session to ensure that input from both parents and professionals is taken into account when delineating a remedial plan. Evaluation results are integrated into a comprehensive report with individually tailored recommendations. Learning and Development Center staff also provide individual and family therapy as well parent management training (PMT) services.
