Clinical Rotations

School-based Health Centers

This is a required rotation conducted four hours per week during the second year of the Child and Adolescent Fellowship. The clinics provide both medical and mental health services. The staffing varies but each has a minimum of a social worker, a nurse practitioner and a support staff member. There is also a pediatric attending backup for the nurse practitioners and psychiatric backup for the social workers. The trainees will have one hour of individual supervision with a faculty member from the Division of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and they will also attend a one-hour weekly multidisciplinary team case conference conducted at The Mount Sinai Medical Center.

Trainees will function as consulting psychiatrists in the school setting. They will conduct second opinion evaluations, medication evaluations, and medication management sessions. They will have the opportunity to interact with the school faculty and staff as well as with the district committee on special education. Trainees will rotate between two elementary schools and two middle/junior high schools and will carry a caseload of approximately eight to ten medication cases plus additional time dedicated to psychiatric evaluations for both the special education evaluation process and second opinions for the primary therapists. All four schools are located in Spanish Harlem within one mile of the Mount Sinai campus. Trainees will also have the opportunity to participate in school-based group therapy and to spend time observing students in both regular and special education classroom setting.
