Guidelines for Resident Eligibility and Selection

Resident Eligibility

The Residency Training Program of the Department of Psychiatry welcomes applications from all eligible physicians. Such applications will be fairly reviewed without regard to race, sex, age, religion, national origin, disability, or veteran status.

Physicians eligible to apply for residency training in Psychiatry are:

1. Graduates of medical schools in the United States and Canada accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME);
2. Graduates of medical schools in the United States and Canada accredited by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA);
3. Graduates of medical schools outside the United States and Canada who have valid visas for entry to the United States, if neither a U.S. citizen or permanent resident, who have recently received a currently valid certificate from the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG);
4. Graduates of medical schools outside the United States who have completed a Fifth Pathway Program provided by a LCME-accredited medical school.

Resident Selection

1. Residents will be selected on the basis of their preparedness, ability, aptitude, academic credentials, communication skills, and personal qualities such as motivation and integrity.
2. The Department of Psychiatry participates in the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP). Results of the NRMP, as well as positions filled outside of the match, will be reviewed on a yearly basis by the Education Committee. Some residents may be accepted outside of the residency match when entering the PGY-II or subsequent years of training.
