World Trade Center Survivor Treatment Program

In response to the events on September 11, 2001, our program offers a wide range of services including grief counseling, supportive counseling, group psychotherapy, and the new, recently tested Brief Recovery Treatment developed by Edna Foa, Ph.D., and her colleagues.

It is too soon to know how many persons will be affected with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in response to recent events. Those at risk for the development of PTSD include:

  • Persons running for their lives following the explosion and collapse of the World Trade Center
  • Those who witnessed the explosion and collapse
  • Those who lost family members and loved ones
  • Rescue personnel including firefighters, police officers, emergency workers
  • Those involved in the rescue effort over the days and weeks following the explosion
  • Persons who saw body parts
  • Persons with prior traumatic exposure or who have had posttraumatic stress disorder in the past
  • Those who lost their place of business or homes
  • Those who have developed persistent fears, terrors, anxieties, and nightmares
  • Children who witnessed the attack, lost a parent or loved one, or know of a friend who lost a loved one

If you or someone you know falls into one or more of these categories and has symptoms that have persisted for several weeks following September 11, 2001, please call our program. Help is available.
