All people with disabilities have the right to self-determination, equal access,
dignity and respect. The Department of Rehabilitation Medicine has defined
its Mission as follows:
- To be a center for excellence in the delivery of coordinated and
comprehensive rehabilitation services for all individuals with disabilities
in order to promote each individual’s potential for participation in
all areas of community life.
- To educate the patient, family, staff and faculty
of The Mount Sinai Medical Center (MSMC), other professionals and the public about
the needs of people with disabilities and their optimal care in order to improve
standards and increase the availability of services and opportunities
for equal participation in community life.
- To provide a leadership role within the MSMC and the network of community-based providers of services to
the disabled population regarding the development and delivery of a continuum of services, which
provide the optimal level of care required in a fiscally responsible manner.
- To measure the outcome of treatments provided and patient satisfaction with
those treatments as a means to continuously improve the quality of services provided.
- To conduct research and disseminate
information in order to: advance the knowledge and the skills of rehabilitation
professionals; reduce physical disability; improve existing and develop new rehabilitation
treatment methods; and enhance the quality of community life for all
people with disabilities.

conducive to individual creativity, growth and development.
