OverviewThe Mount Sinai Department of Rehabilitation Medicine is a center of excellence in the delivery of complete care for people with disabilities. A wide range of comprehensive medical and rehabilitation services is available for individuals with spinal cord injuries, brain injuries, and a variety of other neuromuscular, musculosketetal, and chronic conditions. Under the medical direction of highly trained physicians, the care continuum is delivered by several disability specific interdisciplinary teams of rehabilitation experts in a supportive, motivating environment. It is through this collaborative team approach that the physical, social, psychological, economic, and vocational needs of each patient are best met. The core philosophy of the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine is that all people with physical disabilities have the right to self-determination, equal access, dignity, and respect. It is with this basic tenet in mind that our health care professionals deliver their exceptional patient care, conduct ground-breaking research, and provide superior education and training for students and professionals. The goals of our rehabilitation program are to maximize each individual's skills and independence in self care and mobility, educate our patients and their family about various changes caused by the disability, and assist in the return to community life as quickly as possible. Our patients and their families can learn about their conditions through a wide variety of instructional courses and individual sessions led by members of our rehabilitation team. Hands-on training of family members is strongly encouraged and expected. Family involvement is an important link in the rehabilitation process. The Team-Oriented ApproachThe Mount Sinai Department of Rehabilitation Medicine is led by Kristjan T. Ragnarsson, M.D., whose commitment and innovative approach to patient care have had a major impact in the field of Rehabilitation Medicine.
