Patient Care Services

Introduction

Thanks to improved medical care, more people survive catastrophic injuries and diseases today than every before. Regretfully, physical disability often results and some medical problems remain unresolved. So where do you turn for further help, if you (or your loved one) are unable to care for yourself and need further care? The answer is the Mount Sinai Rehabilitation Center (MSRC), a facility that accepts patients with a wide range of physical disabilities, from the most medically complex to those with temporary impairment. Since MSRC is located at world-renowned The Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City, there is instant access to all of the Hospital’s highly specialized services and physicians, allowing us to treat patients with severe disability and continuing medical/surgical needs. Following inpatient rehabilitation, comprehensive outpatient rehabilitation services are available to those in need.

At MSRC, every effort is made to place the patient and the family at the center. Our rehabilitation team members will address in depth all your concerns regarding medical/surgical needs, recovery, self sufficiency, mobility, quality of life and successful return to community and home, including school, work, and leisure activities.

For patients requiring inpatient care, the MSRC has three self-contained units designed and staffed to meet three categories of disabilities: spinal cord injury, brain injury, and non-neurological disorders (such as orthopaedic, cardiovascular, pulmonary, cancer, amputations, and so on). Both the spinal cord injury and the brain injury services have received special designation by the National Institute of Disability and Rehabilitation Research as Model Systems of Care, and have been fully accredited as such by the Commission for Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF).

Each inpatient unit has a distinct interdisciplinary rehabilitation team and therapy areas on a single floor, eliminating the need for any transportation off the units during therapy hours. Each treatment team is led by a specialist in the field of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (physiatrist) with special experience in the medical management and rehabilitation of the individual's disabilities.

Each interdisciplinary rehabilitation team has a range of allied health professionals including the following:

  • Rehabilitation nurse
  • Occupational therapist
  • Physical therapist
  • Speech language pathologist
  • Neuropsychologist or clinical psychologist
  • Vocational counselor
  • Social worker
  • Dietitian
  • Therapeutic recreation specialist
  • Respiratory therapist
