Medical/Surgical Care

Every person admitted to Inpatient Unit is assigned a Physician Board Certified in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PMR) with a subspecialty in Spinal Cord Injury Medicine who is primarily responsible for the overall care of that person during the hospital stay and after discharge. Every day, all inpatients are evaluated by a physician during rounds.

The Inpatient SCI Rehabilitation Unit is located adjacent to the acute medical/surgical and intensive care units of The Mount Sinai Hospital. Consultants in all of the different medical and surgical subspecialties are available 24 hours per day to provide assistance if needed. These consultants include dedicated spinal surgeons, wound care specialists, neuro-urologists (urologists with special training in neurogenic bladder management), and pulmonologists, all of whom have experience and a strong interest in caring for patients with SCI. Access to all the hospital’s diagnostic and special treatment services is readily available, often eliminating the need for transfers to a medical or surgical specialty unit for care of complex conditions.

There are regularly scheduled case-based interspecialty conferences in both neuro-urology and spinal injury management. The specific management issues of individual patients are formally discussed in these forums, by multiple physicians. In addition, the PMR physicians in charge meet daily with the nursing and therapy staff. Weekly family meeting are also offered.
