Speech-Language Pathology

The speech language pathologist is responsible for assessment of swallowing and communication disorders. For tracheotomized and ventilator dependent patients, the speech language pathologist works closely with the physicians and respiratory therapists to determine appropriateness of speaking valve use. Pre-assessment guidelines for speaking valve use include assessment of pulmonary status, swallowing status, and risk for aspiration and analysis of ability to manage secretions appropriately. If indicated, the speech language pathologist also determines appropriateness of options for alternative and augmentative communication.
