Fellowship Training Program in Adolescent Medicine

The ACGME-accredited, three-year fellowship in adolescent medicine at Mount Sinai prepares fellows as experts in adolescent health. Qualification for the American Board of Pediatrics subspecialty-certifying exam currently requires a three-year fellowship in adolescent medicine for pediatricians. Internists and family practitioners, in order to receive a certificate of added qualifications, require two years of adolescent medicine clinical experience after they complete their three-year residency program.

The goal of this fellowship program is to train physicians to serve as leaders in adolescent medicine. Fellows incrementally assume greater responsibility and accountability for their performance throughout their training, and acquire a wide range of skills. The program is designed to train:

  • Expert clinicians who provide expert, safe, effective, empathic, and efficient patient-centered care
  • Skilled educators, committed to providing comprehensive education to patients, families, interdisciplinary staff, and medical trainees
  • Competent researchers by developing skills in research methodology, design, and statistical analysis that will allow trainees to contribute to the field
  • Advocates for patients and health policies
  • Facilitators of systems-based approaches to achieve desired outcomes in health-related activities in a self-directed manner that is professionally and effectively communicated

In addition to clinical and research training at the Mount Sinai Adolescent Health Center, fellows have an opportunity to participate in advocacy and complementary training programs, including:

  • Physicians for Reproductive Choice and Health
  • Citizen’s Committee for Children
  • Sexual Assault and Violence Intervention

Fellows also receive instruction in the grant writing process, and we encourage them to participate in a variety of academic writing opportunities. As mandated by the American Board of Pediatrics, fellows participate in scholarly work in the form of a hypothesis-driven research project, with the ultimate goal of manuscript submission and acceptance for publication in a peer-reviewed medical journal.
