About Us

The Mount Sinai Injury Control Research Center (MS-ICRC) is part of the Brain Injury Research Center of Mount Sinai. It draws in relevant expertise from and participation of a variety of disciplines within MSSM (neuropsychology, sociology, physiatry, preventive medicine), as well as from other institutions (Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, JFK Rehabilitation Institute of the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey). The staff of the MS-ICRC and the BIRC-MS focus on the same goal: enhancing quality of life of individuals who have experienced TBI. The sole focus is on secondary and tertiary prevention, that is, on minimizing the effects of injury once a person has experienced a TBI.

The research program is aimed at developing: (1) better rehabilitation interventions, (2) an approach to better identify those individuals with "hidden" TBI, and (3) a method to identify the long-term needs of individuals with TBI. Additionally, funds are made available to support seed projects, as a means of bolstering the injury control structure of researchers within New York and the surrounding region.

In addition, a comprehensive approach to knowledge translation and outreach has been developed, including outreach to professionals and to consumers. With respect to the former, programs for training pre- and post-doctoral researchers is being implemented, as are efforts to shape curricula within MSSM to address injury control/prevention objectives. A Web site, educational materials for individuals with TBI, as well as professionally oriented dissemination are also being conducted. The results emerging from the ICRC are being disseminated through extensive knowledge translation activities.

The ICRC is funded for a five-year period (September 1, 2007 - August 31, 2012) by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Grant No. 1R 49CE 001171-01, to the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine, MSSM).

A variety of resources are available for professionals and for people with TBI and their families through the Brain Injury Research Center of Mount Sinai:
