Post-traumatic Stress Disorder Research

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) can develop after exposure to a traumatic event, such as military combat, a violent attack, or a serious accident such as a car wreck or a natural disaster such as a fire or flood. The event that triggers PTSD may arise from a sense of dread or the threat of danger, serious harm, or death.

When the aftermath of a traumatic experience interferes with normal functioning for an extended period, a person may be suffering from PTSD. Symptoms of PTSD can cause significant disruption in an individual's ability to socialize, work, or function normally and may include symptoms such as flashbacks, irritability, overactive startle response, or hypervigilence. Symptoms of PTSD usually occur within three months of a traumatic event, although there can be a delayed onset and many months or years can pass before symptoms appear.

Cognitive-behavioral therapy, group therapy, and exposure therapy, in which the patient gradually and repeatedly relives the frightening experience under controlled conditions, have been shown to be effective treatments for PTSD. Medications also help ease associated symptoms of depression and anxiety and help promote sleep.
