The Center for Comparative Medicine (CCMS) is a centralized, shared resource supporting animal research via veterinary, husbandry care and research collaboration with the faculty at MSSM. The program is fully accredited by the American Association of Laboratory Animal Care, International (AAALAC). The center also provides assistance with research protocol design, clinical and anatomic pathology, and training of research personnel in the care and use of laboratory animals.

There are two primary sites of operation, with the centralization of administration in the Annenberg bldg, 26th floor. The other major housing area is the East bldg, SC level. Two outer lying small facilities make up the remainder of the animal resource, they are the 3rd floor of Basic Sciences and the Atran Basement.

Annenberg bldg: All large animal species (swine, nonhuman primates, rabbits, etc.) are housed in this building. Administrative offices, large animal surgical support (8 operating rooms), and veterinary diagnostic laboratory are located here.

East bldg: State of the art rodent transgenic barrier facility. This facility offers fully automated rodent housing (ventilated caging and automatic watering), necropsy suite, and BSL3 biohazard capability. Also located within this animal facility is the Mouse Genetics Shared Resource Facility.

Atran/Basic Sciences bldg (BSB): These two small facilities provide overflow support for the Annenberg and East bldg, respectively. Animals housed in these areas reflect the general health profiles of the major support area, i.e. BSB reflects East bldg health status.

The faculty of the CCMS consist of three veterinarians: (Director,DVM,DACLAM; Veterinary Clinician, MS/VMD; and Veterinary Pathologists, DVM,Ph.D). Supervisors are certified by the American Association of Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) and conduct ongoing inhouse training of husbandry and research personnel toward certification as well.
